Green Neck Lager

Belgium is known for flavoursome beer styles, the majority of these being ale. So it’s reasonable to expect their lager beer to be well made with an appealing hop aroma, mouth-filling taste and clean finish. Using Coopers European Lager to a reduced volume will concentrate the flavour and lift the alcohol content to approximately 5% ABV, typical of this style.

Ingredients
  • 1 x 1.7kg Coopers European Lager
  • 1 x 1kg Coopers Brew Enhancer 3
  • 1 x 250g Coopers Carbonation Drops
1. Mix
  • In a clean and sanitised Fermenting Vessel (FV), dissolve Brew Enhancer 3 in 2 litres of water.
  • Don't be concerned if any lumps persist as they will dissolve over the course of several hours.
  • Add the European Lager and stir to dissolve.
  • Fill with cool water to the 18 litre mark, stir vigorously and check the brew temperature.
  • Top up to the 21 litre mark with warm or cold water (refrigerated if necessary) to get as close to 18C as possible.
  • Sprinkle supplied yeast over the wort surface and fit the lid.
2. Brew
  • Place the FV in a location out of direct sunlight and try to ferment at 15C.
  • Fermentation should take about 14 days.
  • On day 13 check the specific gravity (SG).
  • Check the SG again the following day and so on.
3. Bottle
  • The brew is ready once the SG has stabilised over a couple of days, expect about 1006 to 1010.
  • Gently fill clean PET bottles to about 3cm from the top.
  • Add 2 carbonation drops per bottle and secure each cap.
  • Store the bottles upright in a location out of direct sunlight at or above 18C.

  • After at least four weeks, check for sufficient carbonation by squeezing the PET bottles.
  • Bottles kept unrefrigerated should improve with age.
  • When ready to drink, chill the bottles upright.
  • The chilled beer may be poured into clean glassware, leaving the sediment behind.
  • Expect the alcohol content to be approximately 5.0% ABV.
